Parade Of SkoolZ

Time for me to suit up and perform. Ya see, every year my church holds a youth conference in June, and it also organises competitions like Talentime, Word Power, Extreme Sports (super hiong one.. endorsed by Singapore Triathlon Association or sth.) etc..

Well, as for me, I am involved in the Parade Of Schools, a grand ol' parade where every educational instituition gets to perform an item that usually includes a cheer, a dance, and some stunts. Last year I was with the East Cluster of secondary schools. This year however, I am with SinGaPore PolY!!... The super enthu people are holding practices every single day, and I am dead beat after 3 straight days of practice. At least this time I don't have to worry about my mid-year exams. Had to study while practising last year lA. And it also gives me something to take up my time during my 'holidays'. Also, this time its not as tiring, as I don't need to do any heavy lifting. YET. Cos so far only learn cheer and dance. Stunts come later. Haha.

Here's some pics of last year's event, just for fun. Copyright CHC.

PPRRRrrreeessseennting, THE EAST CLUSTER!! Love the shirt..

And also, Nanyang Technological University!!

And another pic of NTU...
Sing: I believe I can FLLLYYYyyy.....

And a pic of i-dunno-wad-school. Cool pic though.

POLYmer. POLYclinic. POLYester. POLYmorph.

Few days ago I went down to SP to do my enrolment. The process was well organised and smooth, and in a jiffy I exited the hall, proudly displaying my gliterring new SP student card (literally. the card's gold.) around my neck.

Then came the hard part.

The poly has 4 big clubs:

-Student's Union Council
-Community services and cultural club
-Sports club
-Current affairs and debating club

The other ccas are classified under 'special interest groups', and so are not one of these 'Big Four'.

And so, on that day, the 'Big Four' sought to go all out to promote their plethora of orientation camps and full-day activities lined up for us. Freshmen were herded into each classroom and forced to endure 'persuasive encouragement' to join the various camps. Somemmore mus pay for each event de lor.

And so I went from room to room, full of seniors attempting to psycho me into joining their camps. Haha. By the time I finished my business with the last room in the row, a bruised and fatigued and financially challenged John staggered out, gasping for air and crying for food and water. Oops. Exaggeration. Ha.

So, in the end I signed up for the following programmes:

-Sports club freshman orientation.
-Com service & cultural club full-day event. Called Viking saga or sth.

All this in addition to the poly-wide official O week that precedes the start of term immediately, on 23 May. Also, I am on waiting list for Council and School of Design & Environment's (my school) orientation camps. Looks like my May is gonna be a busy one. Hehe, the most seah-larn (original word disguised. reason: wholesome family blog) thing I can say to all those in a JC is: wHiLe ThE mId YeAr eXaMs aRe bEarInG dOwN oN yOu, PoOr mE hAs tO eNdUrE sO mAnY oRiEnTaTiOn cAmPs. ThIs YeAr i GoT So mAnY oRiEnTaTiOn lE LOr.. hAiZ. *_*....

I have made cOntact.

Haha.. have you read my Casino essay? its just below this.. sorry for not blogging so long.. wanted readers to read it.. haha. know there r not many regulars to tis vv new blog though =(

aNywAy..........

Finally!! After two days of a trails and tribulation, John has finally made a new breakthrough!. He has learned to wear contacts!!

Yep. Got my first pair of cantacts. The first day, I kept trying to stuff the flimsy piece of magic into my eyeballs. Unfortunately, everytime my balls, I mean eyeballs, detected any foreign particle whatsoever, they would slam shut like a Swiss bank vault security door. And when told I must pinch the lens to remove, i recoiled in horror.. But.. b-b-but, ive never pinched my eyeballs before! -_-.. Suddenly I started to respect all those who finally learnt to use contacts. I was amazed the kind ol' lady didnt pull out all her hair after repeating the same instructions over and over again. Thought I saw steam emitting from her head though.

The second day, I came with a resolution to not leave without bringing them home. You see, the ladies wudnt let me take the contacts home if I didnt master the art of using them first. So I thought to myself: 'come on john, you can do it! this is your tenacity being tested!!'

Magically, I started improving after the girl said something which i interpreted as questioning my manhood -_-. Okay, not reli la. what she said was: Ni shi nan ren lei.. zhe me bu ke yi... HAHA. Likewise, I was inspired by tales of 8-9 year old boys accomplishing the feat that was my ultimate goal. Was also quite surprised when told that there were those who, try as they might, could not learn, and had to give up in the end. Sad. Lol. So, I finally learned to control my blinking and relax... and viola! Contacts.

Anyway the girl said the time I took to learn was sumwhere in e middle.. not the shortest, yet not the longest. She added that usually someone with eyes this big ought not to have much trouble though. Now that is a revelation. Truly didn't know I had big eyes. -_-"

And so now John is in contacts! Yipeeeeeee.

Next step: get that freaky pair of 'Radioactive' symbol contacts.. or the 'star' symbol. "john, you have such starry starry eyes!" sing: Twinkle twinkle little eyEez, How I wonder what you are... jkjk. haha. cold. I knoe.

Casino: The Moral Minefield (updated with some details)

Well, since practically everyone is 'in-putting' their own opinion about this issue, I shall now put-in my very own penny's worth of thoughts =p Prepare for a long read. I wrote this after seeing the announcement on CNA...

First and foremost, I agree to the construction of a casino. Oops, 2 casinos. One in Marina Bay and one in Sentosa, so claims the govt.

A Today newspaper reader wrote:

I feel sad reading Mr Lee Kuan Yew's statement: "I went for high culture. I forgot about pop culture. There is where the money is." If high culture means civility, finesse and good taste, and pop culture means bestiality, unbounded self-indulgence and gross kitsch, then I prefer that we remain civil, polite and human.

How much poorer can we be if we do not have a casino? Or, how much richer will we be if we have one?

Surely we are capable of sustaining a decent standard of living without it. Let all the neighbouring countries have their casinos. Let Singapore be the zone of bliss where the people are famed for their sensibilities, fine graces and good breeding. For so many years, Singaporeans have endeared to Mr Lee for his insistence on issues of conscience and he has imbibed in us the sanctity of high human values.

Let the young leaders decide what they deem apt. As elders, we say "no" for fine human values tell us that a casino is more than just gambling: It brings along an avalanche of debauchery.

The guy who wrote this is Mansor Haji Sukaimi, former MP from 1976-1984.

Firstly, the government may be human, but it is not stupid, thats for sure. I agree that whatever it decides is not subject to public opinion. However the reason the PAP has stayed in power for so long is not because it has threatened people with lawsuits, or any physical removal of opposition, unlike conventional dictators like Hitler or Stalin. It has survived because it is the only group of people worthy of leading a nation. The reason the opposition has faltered is because their leaders are proven unworthy. Look at dear Chee Soon Juan: who would want a leader that raises his voice, behaving in a thug-like manner just to criticise another person? Such an impulsive and unruly person is not fit to rule. Also, this brings to mind a comment made by a former opposition MP (name was sumthing Singh, i can't remember), way back in 1987: "Whyever should we build an MRT? We have no need to go underground.. We are not communists, for goodness' sake." -_-"

Have I proven my point? With some opposition leaders bordering on the brink of mental infirmity, it is obvious that those who are fit are already in power, and will remain in power. If any party is fit to rule, they do not need to spend great sums of money to prove their worth. For example, the Workers' Party has been dominating Hougang GRC for years. They have proven themselves capable of leading, and do not need to go about criticing Mr Lee Kuan Yew about some Borneo loan or hand out free anti-PAP flyers in Orchard Road in order to get votes (read: SDP). I have no qualms about such capable and well organised parties taking the helm of our nation. Therefore, we should trust that before any major decision is made, any economic or social impact has been duly examined in great detail by the people that contributed to the making of such a decision.

Singapore is a country renowned for being well-organised and exceptionally clean, in every sense of the word. Should its leaders, being leaders since its independence, not deserve the population's trust? What reason do we have to not trust the PAP, given that they have been almost flawless in leading our nation? Unless they are dishonest and opressive. Now that is a different story.

Furthermore, unlike what the writer of this Forum entry says, Singapore is not a bastion of social graces and moral finesse. We are far from it. I still remember a guy who wrote in to the Straits Times to complain about how he was verbally abused by a man who asked his high-tide little boy to urinate INSIDE AN MRT CARRAIGE. The writer of the complaint had merely told off the man. Yet, what he got in reply was a string of Hokkien vulgarities. My, how 'graceful'. Couple this with common road rage, pub stabbings, hawker centre fights, and we find that Singapore is not the sunshiny clean city foreigners make it out to be. It is just like any other city, and not a . A casino would not improve, nor exacerbate (hmm, awesome word =)) the current situation.

Moving on, this ex-MP says that "Surely we are capable of sustaining a decent standard of living without it. Let all the neighbouring countries have their casinos. Let Singapore be the zone of bliss where the people are famed for their sensibilities, fine graces and good breeding." This is equivalent to suicide for the tourism industry. The casinos are meant to literally absorb the money of tourists. A casino in this nation will plaster our names straight across news headlines in every major global city, in a manner no expensive advertising campaign for a 'unique singapore' can ever accomplish. Right now, foreigners mock us for being staid and boring. We must accept that foreigners love vices like these. A Briton even commented that he refused to come to Singapore, having heard it is a 'city with no life'. Until he heard that we actually had a red-light district, that is. Same goes for the pretty building called a casino. Las Vegas would still be a dusty remote desert town had it not built The Strip.

No matter how many theme parks, zoos, or other 'conventional' tourist attractions we can build, we can never ever compete with any of our rivals. Look at Genting, and look at Escape theme park. Look at Sentosa's Fantasy Island, then look at Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. Or even Sunway Lagoon. Look at UK's Eden gardens, then look at Botanic gardens. How interesting can a Duck ride down a Singapore River flanked by restored shophouses be? The truth is, we can never compete with the big players. Singapore's culture as an attraction wIll get old one day. To keep tourists coming back and spending money in this land, we must admit that we cannot compete with the big players. Unless a big player comes here! We have already received so many proposals for giant casino-operating firms to build a grand complex here that is promised to surpass even Atlantis in scope and size. With such a juicy carrot dangled in fornt of us, we certainly would be stupid to decline. Such an installation will officially make us a big player, and would do more than boost tourism; tourim would skyrocket. A casino is what we need to complete our nation as a tourism hub. A casino need not be a dirty place of vice and immoral activities.

Also, what social costs? A casino is a flashy place full of gold, extravagant decorations, and expensive shows. It is not meant for blue-collar factory workers in singlets and slippers with hungry families to squander off their hard-earned monthly wages. They belong to their neighbourhood 4D betting outlet, not a place where the rich and famous gather to have some entertainment. Furthermore, Singaporeans are already spending money in casinos aboard cruise ships and in Genting. Shouldn't the nation get all the money instead? Also, even if the rich and famous become poor through unecessary gambling, these cases are few. It's just that such cases are reported on a large scale (i.e. that ABC breweries guy). I am sure the government would put in place measures to curb social impacts before it happens, and not after ---> 'help centers' or 'helplines'. (latest update: the twin casinos will be family-focused, based on the Atlantis model. Basically, it will be a fun place for the entire family, complete with world-class water theme parks, which we currently do not posses. AND only 3-5% of floor space is dedicated to gaming. That means Singaporeans can go to the resorts to enjoy wholesome family fun~!)

In addition, jobs. A recent Channel NewsAsia show featured Diana Ser interviewing Macau residents. One guy said: 'Our people do not go there to gamble, we work there.' When Diana asked a classroom of teenagers if their relatives worked in casinos, 8 out of only 20+ teens raised their hands. Undoubtedly, Macau's economy is very dependant on its casinos. In a reasonably prosperous and stable economy like Singapore's, a casino where the rich come to spend money would certainly give us an unimaginable raise for our treasury. A fact that Sukaimi (writer of Today forum extract above) strangely fails to see. Coupled with the new mega-yatch marina, the two flashy new casinos, worth a total of $5 billion, would certainly make Singapore a major port of call for the rich and famous. Singapore's very positive global reputation as a safe haven would want to make people come down and 'try out' the new casinos. Furthermore, we will obviously send out personal invitations to major casino clients. If our casino is well run and entertaining, it will result in a perpetual and stable source of income for many families, and also national reserves.

Practically all religious groups blast the decision because it breaks up families, and solely because it breaks up families. What if it doesn't? These said twin casinos would give a much-needed boost to keep Singapore relevant in the tourism industry, while giving our nation a valuable source of income, and many, many jobs (35,000, estimated). Also, with little social costs. What could be better? Think about it. =)))

Yearning for excitement...

When one experiences the longest break from school he has in TEN years (Can you believe it? My, how time flies. my longest break since primary ONE. Lousy S'pore education system!..), one experiences a whole new world, a world full of freedom, a world full of hope. =)

Well, that's precisely what i'm feeling now.. its still about a month till my school starts, and i'm spending my time swimming, reading, playing computer, going out with friends occasionally, watching tv.. That's about it. Whoa. My life is so... lImItEd. Lol.

SSSSSSIIIIIIAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz....

And with my lousy Creative player dying on me, one of my few remaining avenues of entertainment is slowly dissapearing. Yet i got not enough money (yet) to buy a new proper player.

Damn. I'm ranting about trivial stuff because i'm so bored that i have nothing better to blog about.

Poly enrolment's this Wednesday. haha, poly students really have to settle a lot of stuff lor. Unlike jc, where everything is automatic, we have to settle course fees, and choose financial assistance schemes such as Edusave, CPF, Mendaki (for Malay students only. Lucky ppl..)and a host of other loans n that sorta stuff. There's still a medical check i needa endure, just to certify that i am mentally and physically fit. (hello?? mentally fit? if i am not mEnTaLlY fIt would i even get to qualify for a poly,? Do those paranoid staff need double checking? -__-)

*yawn*

Sorry to put you asleep...

AIEEEEE. BORED.

I know. For those of you loyal enough to read until here, I shall give you a link to a very funny site that had me laughing my cajones off (betcha dunno what that means.).. Here it is:

Vacation during exams? You betcha.

Hellooo. My handbook says these are my school's holiday dates:

OrienTation week: 23 - 28 May

1 week break: 24 -31 July

4 week break: 2 - 30 October

1 week break: 25 Dec - 2 Jan 2006

6 week break: 5 March 2006 - 16 April 2006 (long hor? lolx.)

In otHer wOrds, I will be 'liVin la vIda lOca' while all my JC friends are mugging for exams. Oh dear.

Which means, to spend time with them, I either have to pon school or slack in my schoolwork. lol.

Watched Sahara today. It is standard action movie fare. Do catch it if you just want some cheap thrills. Haha... Can't wait for Star Wars Episode 3 to come out. Looks damn sui la..

There's a new tv show called First Mums. Hmmz.. the 16 year-old mother is really suay lor.. I cant imagine the stress and dirty looks such a person would have to endure in real life. Imagine:

Ah Soh:"Hi jenny! Out with your baby sister?"

Jenny:"Erm... no. she's my daughter =/"

Ah Soh, thinking to herself:"Wah..what type person is she man...".

Yep. It must be tough to forfeit all the joys of youth for the responsibility of bringing up a child. Well, I guess such people need to be understood and forgiven. So dere. Life goes on =)

Oh yeah. NEVER buy Creative products. All my experiences with Creative Technologies have been discouraging negative, with most products like the Zen Micro, Zen Nomad Xtra, Prodikeys etc etc, have been riddled with so many problems that I intend to totally give up on the brand altogether. If singaporean companies want to succeed on the world stage, can they at least make sure their products AT LEAST WORK PROPERLY? Dang. I wanna set my sights on an Ipod Mini to replace my dying, yet 3-month old player.

Lobster John...

Today, john-with-nothing-to-do cycled to the nearby SAFRA club to have a nice swim. It was 12.30 pm. He went early because there would be few people at this time. Obviously, by evening, the pool would be full of little kiddies thrashing about and dunking each other and causing a general safety hazard: "ARGH!! Incoming artillery fire! 3 o'clock! Projectile type: falling kid pushed from poolside!"

Okay okay that was an exaggeration. Anyway back to the story...

He got into the soothing, cold, oxidising (???!), relaxing (but heavily chlorinated..) water....

And didn't wanna come back out. Muhaha.

So he, erm.. i mean, i, swam back and forth, back and forth.

FIFTY times. (I counted.)

Until i got sick of doing the same thing...

So i grudgingly stepped out of the water into the blistering heat of the midday sun.

And when i went to dry myself with the towel,

Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Then i realised that the sun's rays can actually perforate the water's surface!! I had earlier thought that the aforementioned rays would hit the water surface, and due to a change in medium, they would refract so far away from the normal that my back would be safe. (ooh how i miss physics.) -_-".

Yup. So thats how my entire back (and legs and hands and head. but mostly my back..) became sunburnt.

Great. And last time when i went kayaking, it was only my face. Didn't know a simple SAJC cotton t shirt could offer so much protection. Now its my entire tooting being.

*leans back in computer chair...*

OWWWWWWWwwwwww..... =/

Concrete jungles..

Take a look at this:

That red circle, my friends, is the Anglican High School territory. For four whole years i trampled around on it, and know almost every nook and cranny.

Now, check this out:

That, my friends, is my new school, Sing Poly. see the difference??? Its like, HUGE lor, even has its own MRT station! wth... To think i believed AHS was kinda big when i first set foot on it. Now when i walk across the length of SP, i feel like i'm trekking in a concrete jungle. It even has a convention center, not to mention a childcare center, 3 food courts, 1 macdonald's etc etc!.. I feel like i'm in university. eXcept i'm nowhere near.

Hai, after reading Xiaxue's post about JC vs Poly, and the following comments, i'm even more resolute about doing well in poly. Darn. I'm really taking a huge risk in choosing this school. I could have stayed comfortably in sajc sci. heck, I was even chosen to go for some university seminar thing lor.. Very prestigious. It could have looked pretty on my resume. Yet i declined it and made that fateful decision.

Not that i'm regretting my decision even b4 i start school. I'm just psycho-ing myself to do well. All or nothing. Yep. Haiz.

Desperate Housewives rock.

Women cant be pleased?

Joke by a visiting pastor: (i attend City Harvest Church, btw.)

Once there was a new shopping mall in town. It was a mall made for one purpose; for women to find husbands. It had five floors, but one straaange rule: once you go to the next level, you cant go back down till you get a husband.

So, one fine day, this group of young women came to shop. They entered the first level and a door said: these men have jobs and love raising kids. The women said: 'wow cool! what perfect guys. we should take them.' Then, one cautioned: 'heey.. shudnt we go see the upper floors? maybe got better ones lei?'

They then went up one floor. The sign said: these men have HIGH-paying jobs, love kids, AND are good-lOoking! The women exclaimed: 'cool! thats even better! hmm lets go see the neXt level.'

And they went up to the 3rd level. The sign there said: these men have high paying jobs, love kids, are good looking, AND will do the housework! Now the women were REAlli awestruck, but once again the women decided to go up another floor.

So, they went to the 4th floor. A collective gasp arose from the women! The sign said: these great men have high paying jobs, love kids, are good looking, will do the housework, AND are rOmAntic!. 'WOW!' the women said. What more could we ask for in a man? wahaha. But one woman cut in: 'hey, shouldnt we go see what's on top? Im sure it will b better!' So after some short discussion, they all agreed.

So, tadaa, they were on the 5th floor. The sign said in bold: THIS FLOOR IS ONLY TO PROVE THAT WOMEN CANT BE SATISFIED.

Muhahahahahahahahahaha.

the congregation was like..DIAO.... -___-.. and all the girls/women present were giggling/laughing. so.. hmmmmmm... haha. true notZ, this joke? =pp

uh-oh.. i think i will probably be kidnapped and tortured by the Feminist Association of Singapore. nvm, Jus Bring It'! =p

Jkjk. don't kidnap me.

IntrodUction

Hellow all.. welcome to my blog.. this is, as the title says, a place of my own; a place of reflection where i shall pen my thoughts, and record my daily happenings!. Haha.

Joke!!: One day, 2 FBI agents reported to HQ after completing their mission. Their commander asked one to stay for the debriefing, and the other to leave. The other guy complained: But its been long since i last had a debriefing! you see.. i wear boxers!

Geddit?? BRIEFS? BOXERS?
muhahahhahahahahahaha.
cold rite?
i know i know. =)

Anyway anyway back to the serious stuff..
Who am i? John. What am i doing now? slacking. Big time. Like, why do i have totally nothing to do when all my friends are busy mugging.. lol.. anw.. like the sidebar shows, i chose poly, after spending 1st 3 months in SAJC. Not to say its a bad school. Its like, so cool lor. cooler than any other school in my opinion. We are all entitled to our own opinion. But yea, sTrOnGlY advise u to go to sajc. muhaha. Its slackers paradise, yet the students still score well in A lvls (well, kinda..). Why? some believe its divine intervention. After all its a mission school! haha.

Back to topic. well, i had many reasons to choose poly. Although tons of people recommended me to take the JC route for being shorter and 'safer', i chose otherwise. beeecause:

-More relaxed... -_-"
-More hands on, less books
-No need wake up at 6am n stagger home n drop dead at 5pm+
-No need to study irrelevant subjects
-Easier to get position of authority? (well... er... ya WAD.. less competition.)
-Still can get into uni. Got advanced 1-2 yrs standing summore lor. But i must really work hard to top the class. yea.
-No subject-by-subject comparison with JC peers?.....
-I pursue what i love.
-In a league of my own. Muhahaha.. mu zhong wu di. (hanyupinyin correct?? -_-)
-Scholarships are better, yet easier to obtain than JC ones.

That said, i think the only negative things i identified are: 1. Kena bad influence by ah bengs? 2. Very hard to get into NUS. But who says im studying in spore? dun wanna. 3. Treated as a second class student? maybe.

Well, my aim is to get amongst the uppermost strata of the academic body at poly. Muhahaha. Hey, i have to. if not my head will roll. Diploma in Architecture only?? might as well die. Want at least a Masters.

Though its obviously too late to change my mind now, any comments r welcome =)

p.s. The Pacifier movie roxx! i just watched it. damn funny lor. ROX.

ProloGue...

Well, welcome to my blog! haha.. its just up, so it'll take a while for me to smoothen it out i guess. anyway, since this is the first post, i'll just share some of my thoughts on something so elusive, yet so simple: Time. (tis kinda hard to put into words, but i'll try.)

'Moments' are kinda interesting.. when it has yet to come, you yearn in anticipation. When it does come, you experience it for yourself, and that decides if everything turns out the way you thought it to. After it goes in the twinkling of an eye, all you are left with are memories, or photos. In other words, inanimate replicas. You cant experience it again, no matter what.

The passage of time is so fascinating. Our lives last nary a century. Hark back to all your old memories. Which of those would you give all to relive? This sounds very cliched, but doesnt time just FLY? The future seems to stretch for eternity, yet the past that was 'future' before is so short; it can probably be summarised in one sentence:

LIFE is a one way street, and you are captive to your decisions.

Like one week before o lvl results were released. It felt so.. surreal? the waiting, the anticipating, and the feeling that you still 'have time la'. Yet, when the day came, it all hit you in a bang. One flash, and everything's over. Your future's sealed, and guessing game's over. magical huh, if u think about it.

16 years seem like nothing now. I still remember the time i set foot on AHS soil, totally unaware of what to expect. My pants were waay above my waist, my socks were *damn* long, and i wore thick golden glases. Muhaha. Also, i looked up to seniors. I saw them as the people who had 'been thru it all'. I sought to learn from them, to ask questions. Even when it came to the location of the Homec room. As the saying goes: 'when in Rome, do as the Romans do.' My how have things changed. Now im the senior?. heheh.

Now that 4 years have flashed by, would i want to change anything? Has my life been led meaningfully? Is life all about 'having fun and living life to its fullest' as everyone knows it? Tis only 4 years. What would i say after 70? Think about it.

Yes, so many cliches and stereotypes exist, yet sadly they are all true. So much time has passed. And while we are still young, we should think what are we gonna do with our future? Everything will come and go. Nothing remains. So what if you are rich at age 90? You work all your life to get where you are, and then you die, taking not a cent with you. Eh?

Why do you cry if you lose something or someone you love? Because they hold in their lifeless shells, which are way past their prime, all your memories, whether good or bad. And you just.. miss them. When they were alive, all the memories you have of them are in 'cold storage', and you think that anytime you can just revive them. yet when they die, all those memories come flooding back. Its this reminiscing that brings the tears out...

Think about it.
